Canada Retail Sales Rise 1.2% in August

OTTAWA--Retail sales in Canada rebounded in August as activity at new car dealers recovered and higher prices meant people were spending more at the pumps.

Sales increased 1.2% from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted 74.57 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$53.23 billion, Statistics Canada said Friday.

The advance was slightly softer with the data agency's preliminary estimate sales rose 1.3% for the month, following a revised 0.8% decline in July, the first fall this year.

Compared with a year earlier, retail sales in August were 5.4% higher.

The agency said an early tally of receipts indicate sales were up 0.7% in September, though the figure was based on responses from 58.5% of the retailers surveyed and will be revised.
