CME Group 3Q Profit, Revenue Rise on Higher Derivatives Volume

By Adriano Marchese

CME Group reported higher third-quarter profit and revenue, benefiting from increased trading volume despite heightened market uncertainty.

The financial derivatives exchange operator on Wednesday posted a rise in net income to $1.04 billion, or $2.89 a share, compared with $908 million, or $2.49 a share, in the same quarter a year ago.

Adjusted earnings were $3.02 a share. According to FactSet, analysts were expecting $2.99 a share.

Total revenues rose to $1.74 billion from $1.54 billion, coming in ahead of the $1.71 billion projected by analysts. Market data revenue rose 20% to $243.1 million, while clearing and transaction fees reached $1.38 billion, up from $1.23 billion.

Average daily volume, or ADV, which measures the average number of shares or contracts traded daily, 29.4 million contracts, up from 25.3 million in the previous year.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Terry Duffy said that in the quarter, the company launched several new products and generated $100 billion in average daily capital efficiencies.

He also noted that the company made progress in its cloud migration, which allows clients to have access to both co-location and cloud-managed services.

Duffy, who has been CME's chairman since 2002 and CEO since 2016, plans to step down as chief executive of the company early next year. Lynne Fitzpatrick, currently president and chief financial officer, will take over the role.
