Bank of Montreal Appoints Enterprise Chair to Lead C$70 Billion Defense Push
By Adriano Marchese
Bank of Montreal has appointed Michael Bonner to the role of enterprise chair to spearhead its strategy and commercial expansion into Canada's defence sector.
The appointment comes as BMO, one of Canada's largest lenders, recently committed to expand its footprint in Canada's defense sector, targeting up to 70 billion Canadian dollars ($49.78 billion) in capital deployment towards industries critical to national security and economic resilience.
Bonner, who will retain his current role as head of Canadian personal and business banking distribution, will serve as liaison to government agencies and industry associations on defense-related financing under the title of enterprise chair for the Canadian defense sector.
The move coincides with NATO spending mandates which have driven a surge in domestic military procurement and infrastructure investments. BMO Economics projects that Canada's commitment to investing 5% of annual gross domestic product by 2035 will generate about C$150 billion in annual economic effects.
The bank plans to deploy capital across key sectors important or adjacent to the defense industry, including aerospace, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and critical minerals.
