Anglo American's Quarterly Copper Production Slips on Extreme Weather in Chile

By Adam Whittaker

Anglo American's third-quarter copper production slipped due to extreme weather in Chile, but an expected rise in copper grades over the remainder of the year enabled the miner to keep its full-year guidance unchanged.

The London-listed mining giant said Tuesday that it dug out 174,900 metric tons of copper over the period, a 5% fall on the same period a year prior due to snowfall in Chile interrupting mining and production.

Over the year to date, copper production is 1% below the same period last year and a planned improvement in copper ore grades means it still expects to meet its 700,000 tons to 760,000 tons guidance. Its unit-cost guidance was lowered slightly to reflect strong by-product prices and cost management efforts.

Anglo said its planned merger with Teck Resources remained on track as it waits for final approval from China's antitrust regulator.

The company is in the process of divesting its De Beers diamond unit, and said it now expects full-year diamond production of 25 million to 28 million carats, from 21 million to 26 million carats--a rise that reflects it taking full ownership of Canada's Gahcho Kue mine.

Quarterly premium iron-ore production fell 4% to 13.8 million tons after planned plant upgrades hit output.
