AstraZeneca Partners With Oracle to Refine Clinical Research With AI
By Adria Calatayud
AstraZeneca said it is teaming up with Oracle to refine clinical research, in the latest artificial-intelligence partnership in the pharmaceutical industry.
The U.K. drugmaker said Tuesday that the collaboration aims to leverage Oracle's artificial-intelligence, cloud and data capabilities.
Rather than using AI to discover new drug targets, the companies are looking to test practical ways to connect scientific research directly to clinical workflows, initially exploring clinical-trial recruitment, earlier diagnosis and drug-safety monitoring, AstraZeneca said.
The first program to be launched under the collaboration will focus on hypertension care and clinical research in Abu Dhabi in partnership with healthcare company M42, AstraZeneca said. AstraZeneca added that the collaboration would cover multiple international projects across the U.S., the Middle East, and Europe spanning its core disease areas--cancer, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases, respiratory and immunology, and rare diseases.
This marks the latest tie-up between pharma and tech groups, as drugmakers test how to deploy AI to bring new medicines to patients faster and leverage the technology to make their operations more efficient.
AstraZeneca last week said it would partner with startup Insitro to deploy artificial intelligence to explore new treatments for cardiometabolic diseases in a deal valued at up to $1.5 billion. Wegovy maker Novo Nordisk also entered into deals with AI labs Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as Amazon.com, earlier this year.
