Contemporary Amperex Technology's 3Q Net Rises, Higher Costs Weigh

By Jiahui Huang and P.R. Venkat

China's Contemporary Amperex Technology, the world's largest battery maker, reported a rise in third-quarter profit as revenue surged on the expansion of its business.

Net profit rose 14.5% to 21.25 billion yuan, equivalent to $3.18 billion, the company said late Tuesday. Revenue climbed 58.6% to 165.22 billion yuan.

The results come as CATL seeks to sustain earnings growth amid intensifying competition in China's electric-vehicle market, where price pressures and slower demand have raised questions about battery makers' profitability.

For the nine-month period, net profit rose 31.6% to 64.53 billion yuan, while revenue was up 56.2% to 442.14 billion yuan.

Operating costs rose 61.6% to 341.70 billion yuan, and net finance income fell to 1.45 billion yuan from 7.02 billion yuan a year earlier, which the company attributed mainly to foreign-exchange losses.
