AEP, X-Energy and Amazon Partner to Explore Constructing Nuclear Energy Project in Indiana

By Connor Hart

American Electric Power is partnering with X-Energy to evaluate the feasibility of constructing a nuclear energy project in Indiana.

Amazon is supporting the project's development through a funding agreement, the companies said Monday. If completed, Amazon intends to purchase power from the project under a long-term contract, covering both the costs of the facility and its operations.

The 960-megawatt nuclear plant would be located at a former coal plant site in Sullivan County, part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The completed facility would add safe, clean and reliable electricity to the grid, AEP said.

The facility would use X-Energy's Xe-100 small modular reactor technology, which AEP described as an advanced nuclear technology designed to provide safe, reliable energy in a compact footprint.

"With this development plan, we are working to bring together the resources to help meet unprecedented growth in energy demand with reliable baseload power while protecting affordability for existing customers," AEP Chief Executive Bill Fehrman said.

He added that the company's agreements with Amazon and X-Energy will "provide all necessary capital protections and financial safeguards that we have said are essential for any potential nuclear project to move forward."
