Lockheed Martin Delivers Super Hercules Aircraft for U.S. Navy Mission

By Connor Hart

Lockheed Martin said it has delivered a C-130J-30 Super Herculesaircraft that will be converted into the U.S. Navy's next-generation airborne nuclear command-and-control platform.

The aircraft, delivered Thursday at Lockheed's Marietta, Ga., facility, will be modified into the E-130J Phoenix II to support the Navy's Take Charge and Move Out, or TACAMO, mission.

The TACAMO mission provides airborne communications capabilities that help maintain command and control of U.S. nuclear forces.

The aircraft will be transferred to Northrop Grumman, which will oversee the integration of specialized mission systems needed to convert it into the E-130J Phoenix II.

The delivery marks a return to the Hercules aircraft family for the TACAMO mission after an earlier version, the EC-130Q, supported the mission from 1963 to 1993, Lockheed said.

Lockheed didn't disclose financial terms or a timeline for the aircraft to enter service.
