Singapore Private Home Sales Rose in September
By Megan Cheah
SINGAPORE--Singapore private home sales rose in September, after a typically inauspicious period to buy homes in the city-state ended.
Developers sold 296 units last month, excluding executive condominiums, nearly doubling from 153 in August, data from the Urban Redevelopment Authority showed Thursday. This also beat the 255 units sold in September last year.
Sales in September were stronger sequentially after the end of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, said Huttons Asia Chief Executive Mark Yip in commentary. More units were also launched for sale last month than in August, he said.
The seventh lunar month, which started around mid-August this year, is typically viewed as an inauspicious period for purchasing property in Singapore.
Looking ahead, new private home sales are likely to rise in the last quarter of the year as developers are set to launch more projects before the year-end holidays, said Christine Sun, chief researcher and strategist of Realion Group.
Huttons Asia's Yip also noted that while interest rates have recently edged up, historical data indicates that higher interest rates will have minimal effect on demand for new homes. He estimates the transaction volume for private homes could reach around 7,000 units this year.
