Toyota Recalls 31,000 Hybrid Vehicles Over Software Issue

Toyota is recalling nearly 31,000 of its hybrid vehicles over a software issue that could cause the autos' hybrid system to shut down when trying to switch to higher speeds.

The recall affects 2026 Rav4 Plug-In Hybrid vehicles produced between July 22, 2025 and Aug. 19, 2026, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Those vehicles have a plug-in-hybrid system that includes a motor generator engine-control unit, or MG-ECU, that may not complete the motor-initialization process correctly in some cases, the NHTSA said.

As a result, the motor-control mode used for higher speeds is unavailable in those vehicles, meaning that when they reach a certain speed, warning lights will illuminate and the plug-in-hybrid system could shut down, increasing the risk of a crash, the NHTSA said.

Notifications to owners of the affected vehicles will occur by Dec. 6, and dealers will update the software of the affected ECU at no cost, the NHTSA said.
