Stock Market's Enthusiasm About AI May Have Gone Too Far, Says Bank of Canada Gov

By Peter Landers

BANGKOK--Bank of Canada Gov. Tiff Macklem said he thought the stock market's enthusiasm about artificial intelligence may have gone too far.

Speaking at an Institute of International Finance conference, Macklem said it wasn't the job of central bankers to give investment advice but he believed equity markets "look stressed." AI will be transformative, Macklem said, but "it could be a disruptive transition."

On inflation, Macklem said he was concerned that energy prices could keep rising and affect other prices more broadly.

"Every major central bank is worried," he said. As the wars in the Middle East drag on, "these costs have to go somewhere."

He said the impact on the global economy from the war has been less significant than initially feared, partly because countries including China tapped reserves. However, "you can only release your strategic reserves so many times," and "at some point China will have to come back" into the market, he said.
