Nvidia will donate computing resources valued at $250 million to U.K. scientists to aid agentic artificial intelligence safety and security research.

The U.S. chipmaker said Wednesday that the five-year agreement, which is valued at $50 million a year, will mainly support the wider U.K. AI safety and security research community. A portion of the funding will support the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab, the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab and Imperial College London.

Agentic AI refers to advanced systems designed to operate without direct human intervention.

"AI capability and safety must advance together," said Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang.

"With this $250 million commitment, Nvidia will put accelerated computing in the hands of U.K. researchers to develop, test and strengthen safeguards for increasingly powerful AI."

The British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab is led by the University of Oxford and is developing approaches that help AI systems learn, adapt and operate alongside people.

The Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab, led by University College London, is exploring new open source AI architectures and more accessible ways to develop and deploy AI.

Imperial's work will include safety engineering and robotics.

Nvidia said it will fund compute access through U.K.-based Nvidia Cloud Partners, with infrastructure hosted in the U.K.

"To realize the opportunities of AI, people need to feel the technology is safe and secure," U.K. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said. "The government is committed to ensuring AI can be securely harnessed to fuel new discoveries and drive growth."
