Volkswagen Vehicle Deliveries Fall on Continued China Weakness
By Dominic Chopping
Volkswagen Group vehicle deliveries fell in the third quarter as the German automaker continued to suffer from a deteriorating market in China.
The company, which houses a stable of brands that includes VW, Audi and Porsche, said Monday that group vehicle deliveries fell 14% on year to 1.89 million.
"The Volkswagen Group was unable to escape the significant decline in the Chinese total market, particularly in the combustion-engine vehicle business," it said.
Deliveries in China fell 39% in the quarter to 405,800 vehicles, despite increasing demand for the company's second-generation plug-in hybrid and range-extender models, it said.
The company saw deliveries drop across all of its regions except Central and Eastern Europe, with Western Europe deliveries falling 2.8% and North America deliveries dropping 5.8%.
Globally, deliveries of the group's all-electric vehicles fell 4.7% on year to 240,200, with Europe the only region showing growth.
"In our home market, we are seeing a significantly accelerated trend towards all-electric vehicles," said Martin Sander, member of the group's extended executive committee for sales. "The main reasons for this are the currently high fuel prices and the wider range of entry-level models."
