Tata Motors Raises Bid for Italy's Iveco
By Joshua Kirby
Tata Motors raised its offer for Iveco in light of delays due to regulatory approvals, pushing up the value of the planned takeover closer to just shy of 4 billion euros ($4.49 billion.)
India's Tata Motors said in a filing published Friday that it raised its offer to 14.40 euros a share, up 30 cents from the original 14.10 euros it had offered for the truck maker. The new offer gives the company an equity value of around 3.905 billion euros, according to the filing. Shares in Milan-listed Iveco closed Friday around the new offer level of 14.40 euros.
Iveco said last month its board unanimously supported the initial offer, and recommended shareholders accept the deal. The company said Friday it welcomed the increase in the offer price.
Tata Motors, an arm of conglomerate Tata Group that counts British luxury auto maker Jaguar among its assets, agreed last year to buy Iveco's commercial-vehicles business, with the completion of the transaction subject to the spinoff of Iveco's defense business. Italy's Leonardo agreed to buy that business earlier this year, paving the way for the takeover of the remaining business by Tata Motors.
Shareholders will vote on the transaction at a meeting scheduled for Oct. 16.
