Teva Pharmaceuticals Shares Rise After FDA Approves Weltruza for Schizophrenia

By Chris Wack

Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries shares rose after the company's Teva Pharmaceutical affiliate said the Food and Drug Administration has approved Weltruza for extended-release injectable suspension for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.

The stock was 6% higher, at $41.56, in morning trade, after hitting its 52-week high of $41.69 just after the market opened.

The company said Weltruza clinical trial results demonstrated improvement in symptoms and significant reduction in illness severity, as well as improvement in personal and social functioning.

Teva said that in the coming weeks, Weltruza will be available in three different strengths - 318 mg, 425 mg and 531 mg - with no loading doses, no oral supplementation and no post-injection monitoring required.

In a phase 3 trial, all three doses of Weltruza were similarly tolerated, with the most common reported adverse events inclusive of increased weight, somnolence, headache, constipation and injection site reactions.

Teva said Weltruza will be available in the U.S. in the coming weeks.
