American Airlines to Bring Starlink's In-Flight Wi-Fi Service to Mainline Jets
By Kelly Cloonan
American Airlines tapped Elon Musk's Starlink to provide its in-flight Wi-Fi service to all of the carrier's mainline jets.
The airline said Thursday it aims to operate one of the world's largest Starlink-connected fleets, with plans to outfit more than 1,000 mainline aircraft including Airbus narrowbodies and Boeing narrowbodies and widebodies with the service. It expects installations to begin early next year.
American said the move caters to customers' demand for dependable connectivity while in flight. With Starlink, passengers will be able to livestream shows, respond to emails, scroll social media and catch up on messages, American said.
Other carriers, like United Airlines and Frontier, have similarly started offering Starlink's service or laid plans to roll it out in the coming months. Delta has opted for Amazon's offering instead.
