Volkswagen Recalls More Than 22,000 Electric Vehicles Over Fire Risk

By Kelly Cloonan

Volkswagen is recalling 22,524 electric vehicles, citing the risk of a fire due to a high-voltage battery failure.

The recall affects certain of the automaker's ID.4 vehicles produced between the start of 2023 and Feb. 1, 2025, according to a report posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In those vehicles' high-voltage batteries, certain charging profiles combined with a charge of more than 80% may trigger a fire. The root cause is unknown, the report said.

About 0.1% of the vehicles included in the recall are estimated to have the defect.

A remedy is currently under development, the NHTSA said. In the interim, the vehicles' owners are advised to only charge their vehicles to a maximum of 80% battery capacity.

Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed Nov. 27, and additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available, the NHTSA said.
