Woodward to Provide Actuation System for Airbus Folding Wing Demonstrator

By Stephen Nakrosis

Woodward said it was selected to provide an actuation system to support Folding Wing research being conducted by Airbus.

Woodward will supply a complete system for wing actuation, which will be used in tests at Airbus' facilities in Bremen, Germany and in Bristol in the U.K. The ground based demonstrator will explore how longer wings can make aircraft more efficient, as well as how to fold and lock wings to fit existing airport infrastructure.

Meeting the target performance requires a larger folding portion of the wing than currently available on aircraft, which is a defining feature of next-generation aircraft design, Woodward said.
