Japan's Major Beer Makers Investigated by Antitrust Regulator

By Kosaku Narioka

Japan's four major beer makers were probed by the Japanese antitrust regulator for suspected violations of antimonopoly regulations, the companies said.

Asahi Group Holdings, Kirin Holdings, Suntory Holdings and Sapporo Breweries said in separate statements Wednesday that they will fully cooperate with the investigation by the Japan Fair Trade Commission.

Subsidiaries Asahi Breweries, Kirin Brewery, Suntory Spirits and Sapporo Breweries are subjects of an investigation, the companies said.

Sapporo said the suspected violations relate to an alleged unreasonable restraint of trade concerning the sale prices of alcoholic beverages.

Shares of Sapporo fell 1.8% on Wednesday, leading declines among the companies. Kirin Holdings dropped 1.4% and Asahi Group shed 1.0%. Neither Suntory Holdings nor its unit Suntory Spirits is listed.
