BHP to Sell Idled Australian Nickel Concentrator to Gold Fields
By Rhiannon Hoyle
BHP has agreed to sell the shuttered Kambalda nickel concentrator in Western Australia to South Africa's Gold Fields alongside a package of tenements and mineralization rights.
The value of the deal wasn't disclosed.
BHP said in a statement Wednesday that Gold Fields "will evaluate options for the long-term use of the concentrator," which was mothballed in 2024.
BHP suspended its broader Western Australian nickel operations that year, citing market oversupply. The miner is assessing options for the remainder of those nickel assets, which includes a nickel refinery, smelter and mining operations.
The sale of Kambalda to Gold Fields is expected to be completed during 2027, BHP said.
Gold Fields recently bid for Australia's Northern Star Resources, which has assets in the region. While Northern Star rejected its takeover proposal, Gold Fields has said it will continue to seek talks with the company.
