Utilities Up After Constellation, Google Deal — Utilities Roundup

Shares of power producers rose sharply after another multibillion-dollar electricity supply deal related to the artificial-intelligence boom.

Constellation Energy surged after it struck a deal with Alphabet's Google to increase nuclear-power capacity on the PJM grid. The deal would squeeze more production out of existing reactors, but Constellation executives said it would be the equivalent to building a large reactor.

Constellation rival Vistra rose sharply after the Energy Department confirmed it would give the nuclear-energy company a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion.

Among other independent power producers, NRG also rose sharply.

Still, the utilities sector remains deep in the red for the year to date. Rising Treasury yields have "plagued" the sector, said Alex Kania, utilities analyst at brokerage BTIG.
