Vistra Shares Climb on $4.2 Billion Government Loan Commitment

By Katherine Hamilton

Vistra shares rose after the Energy Department confirmed it would give the nuclear-energy company a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion.

The stock gained 11% to $160.58 on Tuesday. Shares are still down 3% overall this year.

The commitment is meant to finance modernization efforts across Vistra's nuclear plants in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Vistra must satisfy certain conditions before the Energy Department enters into definitive financing to fund the loan.

The commitment would provide lower-cost funding for life extension and uprate investments at the site, Siebert Williams Shank analysts said in a note.

The Energy Department also said the commitment includes an option to finance potential future uprates at Vistra's Comanche Peak plant in Texas. That option could turn into the next source of incremental nuclear capacity for Vistra, the analysts said.

Vistra, among other nuclear companies, have gained traction in recent years due to the boom in artificial-intelligence development. AI hyperscalers are in need of more power sources to fuel data centers, and nuclear energy is seen as a potentially cheaper and cleaner source.

Competing nuclear-power companies including Oklo and GE Vernova saw a boost to their stock on Tuesday, as well.
