Canada Goods-Trade Surplus Widens to C$4.2 Billion in August
By Robb M. Stewart
OTTAWA--Canada's merchandise-trade surplus with the rest of the world widened sharply in August as shipments to the U.S. jumped ahead of fresh tariffs late in the month.
The country posted a goods-trade surplus of 4.2 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$2.94 billion, the largest since May 2022, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.
Economists were expecting a positive balance of C$1.5 billion, after the surplus in July narrowed to an upwardly revised C$787 million.
Exports increased 2.5% to C$77.91 billion in the latest month, while imports declined 2.0% to C$73.71 billion, Statistics Canada said.
Exports to the U.S., Canada's biggest market by a wide margin, climbed 8.1%, while imports from the U.S. were down 2.5%. That widened Canada's longstanding surplus with its neighbor to C$11.22 billion in August from C$6.05 billion the month before, the largest positive change on record.
