Australia's Macquarie Invests in Singaporean Data-Center Developer

By Stuart Condie

SYDNEY--Australia's Macquarie Group has taken a stake in Singapore-based data-center developer Zerra DC, increasing its exposure to artificial intelligence-driven infrastructure growth in the Asia-Pacific region.

Zerra on Tuesday said investment from the ASX-listed group's Macquarie Capital subsidiary would support continued development and expansion of its platform, which is targeted at so-called hyperscale customers.

Zerra didn't disclose the size of the investment or Macquarie Capital's stake in its business.

"Macquarie Capital brings significant experience in backing and growing digital infrastructure businesses, and its investment will help us strengthen our delivery and operating capabilities across our projects in Australia, Japan and India," Zerra cofounder Kristian Steffensen said.

Macquarie Capital's investment builds on its existing agreement with Zerra to build an Australian data center.

Local real-estate developer Dexus announced the project last month, saying its majority-owned Australian Data Centres business had a 25% stake in a consortium with Macquarie Capital and Zerra. Anthropic signed a lease for the center, Dexus said.

Macquarie Capital is already a lead investor in European data-center platform KevlinX, and previously held an interest in U.S.-based Prime Data Centers. It completed its exit from Prime during its last fiscal year, which ended March 31.

"The growth of AI and cloud services is driving demand for larger, well-planned and sustainable data-center campuses across Asia-Pacific," said Ivan Varughese, head of Macquarie Capital Infrastructure Principal, Asia Pacific.
