Lowe's Tests Drone Delivery Via DoorDash

Lowe's is testing drone delivery for its home-improvement products through DoorDash, marking the latest venture into the technology by a retailer.

Through a pilot program at its store in Matthews, N.C., Lowe's customers will be able to order its products via the DoorDash app and receive them in as fast as 20 minutes, the company said Thursday. Drone operator Wing, a unit of Alphabet, will deliver the orders.

Lowe's said the move aims to make it easier for customers to get hold of supplies at short notice during home-improvement projects.

"We're addressing a real project pain point with an innovative solution that is integrated into the retail journey, giving our hometown customers next-generation fulfillment right when they need it," said Seemantini Godbole, chief information and AI officer at Lowe's.

The initial pilot includes select items like hand tools and paint products as well as household goods such as soap, tape, all-purpose cleaner and batteries, Lowe's said.

Retailers have increasingly turned to drone delivery as the technology advances.

Walmart said earlier this year it would expand its drone delivery service with Wing to more stores, with a goal of setting up the service at more than 270 of its locations nationwide by 2027. Amazon.com last month said it plans to roll out its Prime Air service to nearly 500 cities and towns by the end of the year.
