U.S. Business Activity Rose in September

By Jessica Coacci

U.S. business activity in the private sector rose again in September while price pressures continued to rise, a monthly survey said.

The S&P Global Flash U.S. Composite PMI - based on its surveys of services and manufacturing firms, rose to 58.4 in September from 56 in August. A reading above 50 indicates activity continued to grow.

A further surge in service sector business activity was accompanied by a renewed improvement in manufacturing output growth, the survey said. Employment also rose sharply, as jobs were added at a pace not seen for more than four years.

"U.S. business continues to boom, with output growing at the fastest rate for over five years in September," said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence.

However, price pressure continued to mount as input costs surged higher due to the recent spike in energy prices. The survey said backlogs of work continued to rise at an increased rate and supply-chain delays intensified, pointing to a lack of operating capacity which fed through to higher prices.
