ICE Canola Midday: Prices Higher, Following Chicago Soy

WINNIPEG, Manitoba--Intercontinental Exchange canola futures were stronger late Monday morning, riding the spillover from the upswing in the Chicago soy complex.

Soy was climbing on speculation China could buy more soybeans from the U.S. ahead of Wednesday's summit between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in Washington. Support also was coming from increases in European rapeseed, but there were losses in Malaysian palm oil.

Crude oil was down hard, which put a lid on the upticks in the vegetable oils. An analyst said the market is quite long and that could be generating a selloff.

The Prairie forecast put temperatures in the low to mid-20s Celsius with no rain over the next few days, which should spur more harvesting.

Alberta reported that its harvest was only 29% complete overall as of Sept. 15, with the province's canola at 4% finished.

The November canola contract remained well ahead of its major moving averages, further underpinning the oilseed.

Canola crush margins contracted with the November positions falling C$7.60 to C$9.20 at C$259.90 to C$269.10 per tonne above the futures.

The Canadian dollar was stepping back late Monday morning, with the loonie at 71.34 U.S. cents, compared with Friday's close of 71.42.

About 29,350 canola contracts were traded as of 11:36 a.m. ET with prices in Canadian dollars per metric tonne:
