Nymex Overview: Petroleum Futures See Mixed Action, Remain on Track for Weekly Gains — OPIS
Crude oil futures prices were seeing small movement and refined product prices were mixed Friday morning while contracts were set to end the week with gains.
Brent crude futures were seeing small declines heading into Friday afternoon, with the November contract falling by 24cts to $104.64/bbl while December prices were off by 1ct to $99.92/bbl in more active trade at about 11:15 a.m. ET.
If the declines hold, it will mark the third-straight day that Brent prices have weakened.
West Texas Intermediate crude futures were mixed, with the lightly traded October contract rising by 43cts to $102.34/bbl while November prices fell by 17cts to $97.06/bbl.
RBOB futures were also pulling back in early trade, with October prices off by 0.8ct to $3.4993/gal while November prices were trading 1.08cts lower to $3.2378/gal.
ULSD prices were seeing solid gains after two days of declines, with October prices rising by 1.65cts to $5.1304/gal while November prices were 1.32cts higher to $4.9022/gal.
Petroleum prices have been falling in the last few days as worries eased about oil supply from Saudi Arabia, with reports that the kingdom could restore some flows through its damaged East-West Pipeline while also using other work-arounds to meet customer demand despite attempts by Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen to disrupt oil shipments through the Red Sea.
Still, on Friday news reports indicated that Saudi officials have informed some European refiners they will receive no oil next month due to the pipeline damage.
"Diplomatic signals have added to the downward pressure. Beijing has privately encouraged Tehran to help contain the escalation, while the prospect of contact between Gulf states, Washington and Tehran at the UN General Assembly represents the first visible negotiating channel in months," said Daniel Takieddine, CEO of Sky Links Capital Group.
Retail prices for gasoline and diesel, however, continue to rise, with the national average price for regular unleaded gasoline up 3cts overnight to $4.4687/gal, according to OPIS/AAA data. The average retail diesel price rose more than 5cts to $6.4476/gal.
