Telesat, Orange Commission First European Gateway for Lightspeed LEO Network

By Adriano Marchese

Telesat and telecom operator Orange have commissioned the first European ground gateway for the Telesat Lightspeed low Earth orbit satellite network.

The gateway is a key component of Telesat's terrestrial infrastructure as it looks to deploy an initial 225 satellites that will form the Telesat Lightspeed constellation.

Shares trading in Toronto were up 6.2% to 72.71 Canadian dollars ($51.98).

The gateway, which is now installed and commissioned, is hosted in Orange's teleport in Bercenay-en-Othe, France, where the company will provide connectivity to Telesat's hub in Paris.

The move is part of Telesat's broader goal of launching global commercial low-Earth orbit service in early 2028, said the company's chief commercial officer, Glenn Katz.

The company's satellites will provide telecom, enterprise, aviation, maritime and defense customers with control over their own services and data.
