ICE Canola Midday: Production Declines Slightly, StatCan Reports
WINNIPEG, Manitoba--Canola futures on the Intercontinental Exchange were down slightly Wednesday after Statistics Canada released its latest satellite imagery-based principal field crop estimates.
Canadian canola production for 2026-27 is expected to ease off by 0.8% from the year before at 22.1 million metric tons. While yields are expected to drop by 8.3% at 41.8 bushels per acre, harvested area is set to rise by 8% at a record of 23 million acres.
An analyst said the decline in production was not surprising, but the production figure was "heavy." They also said there is the possibility of lower yields in StatCan's December survey-based report.
The Manitoba canola harvest advanced by 21 points at 36% complete as of Sept. 14.
Crude oil prices dropped by approximately US$3 per barrel after the U.S. said a Saudi pipeline damaged by Iran-backed Houthi rebels will restart in a matter of days. Chicago soyoil and European rapeseed were down. There was no trading for Malaysian palm oil on Wednesday due to Malaysia Day.
Most of Alberta will see sunny skies and daytime temperatures up to 20 degrees Celsius. However, temperatures will be in the teens and rain is in the forecast for Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
About 36,900 canola contracts have traded at 10:17 a.m. CDT.
