U.S. Business Inventories Climbed in July

By Dean Seal

U.S. businesses inventories rose between July and June at a faster clip than expected, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.

Across manufacturers, retailers and merchant wholesalers, inventories were up 0.8% month-over-month at $2.76 trillion for July. Analysts polled in The Wall Street Journal's pre-release survey had been looking for a 0.6% pickup. Inventories ticked up by a revised 0.1% in June.

The inventories-to-sales ratio in July was 1.3, unchanged from last month and down from 1.37 in the same month a year earlier. A falling inventories-to-sales ratio indicates that sales have been outpacing restocking activity.
