IBM Finalizes $1 Billion Government Deal to Advance Quantum Computing
By Connor Hart
Anderon, an IBM company, said it was awarded $1 billion from the Commerce Department, structured as a research-and-development grant under the 2022 Chips and Science Act.
The grant will accelerate Anderon's efforts to advance the nation's quantum wafer manufacturing capabilities, the company said Wednesday.
The deal has been in the works for several months. The U.S. Department of Commerce said in May that it would award $2 billion in grants to nine quantum-computing companies, including International Business Machines, a leader in the race to build computers that use quantum mechanics to solve problems much faster than traditional supercomputers.
Last week, Rigetti Computing, D-Wave Quantum, and Quantinuum each inked $100 million deals with the department in exchange for equity stakes in their businesses.
Headquartered in Albany, N.Y., Anderon serves the quantum industry as a pure-play foundry, offering quantum wafer manufacturing to customers across the ecosystem. The company is backed by an additional $1 billion investment from IBM.
Mukesh Khare, the general manager of IBM's semiconductors division, has been appointed CEO of Anderon. He said in a statement that Anderon's recent agreement with the Commerce Department will strengthen the company's ability to deliver the manufacturing scale the quantum industry needs.
"We're building a foundation that will let quantum move from research breakthroughs to real-world impact," he said.
Anderon said it offers specialized wafers that support a range of quantum architectures. The company previously achieved what it called a significant operational milestone, with the first quantum wafers now running through its manufacturing facility.
