Canada Auto Workers' Talks With Stellantis Hit Impasse Over Future of Ontario Factory, Union Says

By Paul Vieira

OTTAWA--The union representing Canada's automotive workers said talks on a new labor deal with Stellantis have stalled over the company's plans for a factory that has been idle for two years.

Stellantis executives, during bargaining, reiterated the company's plan to sell its factory in Brampton, Ontario, Unifor said. The car maker has an interested buyer in Roshel, a Canadian-based producer of smart-armored vehicles, and the two parties have signed a memorandum of understanding, the union said.

Stellantis confirmed it has been in negotiations with Roshel.

"The persistence of the company's proposal to close and sell the Brampton plant has hindered the bargaining process," Unifor said, adding that its talks with Stellantis have reached an impasse. The union represents over 9,000 of the company's employees.

A Stellantis spokeswoman said Roshel represents the best option to restoring operations at its Brampton assembly plant, "preserving the site's strategic role in Canada's advanced manufacturing sector and helping to avoid a prolonged period of inactivity." She had no further comment, citing collective-bargaining talks with Unifor.

Representatives for Roshel weren't immediately available for comment.

Unifor said the current collective agreement with Stellantis expires on Sept. 20.
