Lyft, Waymo Partner to Roll Out Robotaxi Service in Nashville

By Connor Hart

Lyft is teaming up with Alphabet's Waymo, now offering the company's autonomous ride-hailing services in Nashville, Tenn.

The ride-hailing company said Wednesday that riders can now be matched with Waymo's fully autonomous vehicles through the Lyft app in Nashville, making it the first city in which Waymo vehicles are available across both the Waymo and Lyft apps.

"Nashville riders have been quick to embrace autonomous vehicles as part of how they get around the city," said Sid Patil, head of rideshare at Lyft. "Adding Waymo vehicles to our marketplace is a natural fit."

The rollout comes after the companies last year said they would work together to offer autonomous rides--a partnership that comes as competition heats up among both ride-hailing and robotaxi companies to offer autonomous rides across the country.

Lyft users requesting rides within central Nashville can be matched with a Waymo vehicle at no additional cost through the Lyft app. Availability will continue to grow gradually over the coming weeks, and riders can always decline an autonomous ride or opt out of them entirely, the companies said.

As part of the partnership, Lyft will next month open an AV fleet-management facility in Nashville, designed specifically to charge and service the vehicles. The facility will bring more than 70 full-time roles to Nashville just this year, including skilled technicians, fleet operations leads and coordinators and service coordinators, the companies said.
