Nordic Energy Company Fortum Shares Jump on Google Nuclear Power Agreement

By Adam Whittaker

Shares in Fortum jumped after the Nordic energy company signed a deal with Google to power data centers in Finland.

In morning European trade, shares were 8.3% higher at 23.11 euros.

Fortum said Wednesday that it signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with the U.S. tech giant that would enable it to extend the life of its Loviisa nuclear power plant. The plant currently provides 10% of Finland's electricity, the company said.

Under the agreement, Google will buy 50% of the nuclear power plant's capacity from 2030 through 2049.

Google said Wednesday that it would invest at least 13 billion euros, equivalent to around $15 billion, in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland over the next two years.
