Fitch Ratings Upgrades Portugal on Fiscal Prudence, Declining Debt
By Elias Schisgall
Fitch Ratings upgraded Portugal's long-term issuer default ratings to A+ from A, citing the country's strengthened public finances.
The ratings agency on Friday said the government's fiscal prudence has improved the resilience and shock absorption capacity of the Portuguese economy.
"The upgrade reflects Portugal's strengthened public finances, including a projected path of declining government debt and fiscal balances that are considerably stronger than peers, underpinned by a strong political commitment to fiscal prudence," Fitch said.
Portugal's debt is expected to fall from 89.7% of its gross domestic product last year to 87% this year and 82.9% in 2028. The country is also expected to have a general government surplus this year and a comparatively light average budget deficit in 2027-28.
Fitch put Portugal's outlooks as stable.
