U.S. Regulator to Probe Tesla Cybercabs After Austin Launch

By Katherine Hamilton

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administrationis investigating Tesla's new Cybercabs after the company's launch of the self-driving cars in Austin, Texas.

The regulator is examining the process and technical data that Tesla used when certifying the Cybercab, and will consider the degree to which Tesla's certification depended on determinations that certain Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards are inapplicable to the vehicle.

The Cybercabs, which lack steering wheels and pedals, started driving on the roads of Austin earlier this week, marking the public debut of Tesla's fully autonomous cars. The vehicles aren't yet available for sale to customers, but customers in the city can book taxi rides with them.

Tesla told the NHTSA it plans to gradually expand commercial deployment of the Cybercab to include additional vehicles and locations.

The NHTSA's investigation includes roughly 1,000 Cybercabs.

Competitors Waymo and Zoox have also been expanding their robotaxi offerings. Earlier this week, Amazon's Zoox launched its self-driving vehicles in Houston and San Diego. The vehicles are similar to Cybercabs in that they lack pedals and steering wheels.

Alphabet's Waymo this week added three new cities to its portfolio of places offering autonomous rides, bringing its total number of markets to 14.
