U.S. Jobless Claims Ticked Back Up Last Week

By Dean Seal

U.S. jobless claims swung upward again somewhat last week but were generally flat as job creation slows.

The number of people who filed for unemployment benefits was 206,000 in the week through August 29, 2,000 higher than the upwardly revised 204,000 reported a week earlier, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal were expecting to see the figure come in at 205,000.

Continuing claims, which scale with the total size of the unemployed population, totaled just under 1.78 million in the week through August 15, climbing 8,000 from the downwardly revised total a week earlier. The data on continuing claims lag the initial-claims data by a week.

The private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this week that businesses added 38,000 jobs in August, the slowest pace of job creation since January. Economists have been expecting unemployment to hold at 4.1% when they get a readout from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' upcoming jobs report, due out Friday.
