Novartis Drug Meets Key Goal in Late-Stage Multiple Sclerosis Trials
By Adria Calatayud
Novartis said its Rhapsido drug met the primary objective in two late-stage clinical trials in the most common form of multiple sclerosis by reducing relapse rates compared to a rival treatment.
The Swiss pharmaceutical company said Tuesday that its drug reduced the annualized relapse rate and inflammatory brain lesions relative to Sanofi's Aubagio in two trials with patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis.
The drug also showed a favorable safety profile in the studies, Novartis said.
Novartis said it plans to submit the data to health authorities globally to seek regulatory authorization in relapsing multiple sclerosis for the drug, which is already approved in the U.S. and the Europe Union for the treatment of skin condition chronic spontaneous urticaria.
