Nvidia to Invest $3.5 Billion in Taiwanese Chip Designer MediaTek — Update
By Connor Hart
Nvidia said it is investing $3.5 billion in chip designer MediaTek, deepening their collaboration to build next-generation AI computing platforms.
Under the expanded collaboration, Nvidia will buy $3.5 billion in MediaTek convertible bonds while the chip designer will gain access to Nvidia's NVLink Fusion platform. This would allowing MediaTek to provide hyperscalers, cloud-service providers and frontier model developers with the ability to develop custom processing chips.
The companies' collaboration aims to advance three major areas: artificial-intelligence infrastructure, local AI computing and automotive technology, Nvidia and MediaTek said.
MediaTek will work with Nvidia's NVLink Fusion platform, enabling customers to develop custom AI infrastructure that is designed to integrate with Nvidia's rack-scale systems and AI factories, the companies said.
The companies will also continue to collaborate on multiple generations of Nvidia chips, as well as continue to develop platforms for AI-powered, software-defined vehicles in the era of physical AI.
