London Gatwick Airport Pretax Profit Falls on Lower Passenger Numbers

By Anthony O. Goriainoff

London Gatwick Airport said pretax profit fell for the first half after fewer passengers traveled through its installations.

The airport, which is managed by France's Vinci Airports, said passenger volumes fell 4.7% to 19.1 million passengers. The airport said this was due to the continuing conflict in the Middle East as well as capacity cuts undertaken by some ultra low-cost airlines.

Still, the airport said demand for travel remained strong and noted seven airlines--including Jet2, Air France and Eurowings--had joined the airport in the first six months of the year. It added that a further two airlines--Air Zimbabwe and Air Arabia--had started operating there in the second half.

Gatwick said pretax profit fell to 136.5 million pounds ($186.3 million) compared with 166.2 million pounds the year before.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization--a key metric for the airport--were 276.5 million pounds, up from 262.2 million pounds.

Revenue rose to 515.2 million pounds from 491.4 million pounds.

"Despite a challenging geopolitical and economic backdrop, London Gatwick has continued to perform well, grow its network and deliver a world-class service for passengers," Chief Executive Pierre Hugues-Schmit said.
