WEC Energy Signs 20-Year Power Purchase Agreement for Point Beach Nuclear Plant

By Anvee Bhutani

WEC Energy Group said its Wisconsin Electric Power unit signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with NextEra Energy Point Beach to purchase 86% of the capacity, energy, ancillary services and environmental attributes from each of the two units at the Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant.

The agreement runs through 2050 for Unit 1 and through 2053 for Unit 2, beginning when the current agreement for each unit expires, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The agreement is subject to approval from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. If approved, WEC said the new agreement will result in customer savings compared with the terms of the current power purchase agreement.
