U.S. Jobless Claims Rose Again Last Week

By Dean Seal

U.S. jobless claims continued to rise last week, moving higher than expected.

The number of people who filed for unemployment benefits was 209,000 in the week through Aug. 8, 9,000 higher than the upwardly revised 200,000 reported a week earlier, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal were expecting to see the figure rise to 204,000.

Continuing claims, which scale with the total size of the unemployed population, totaled 1.78 million in the week through Aug. 1, falling by 22,000 from the downwardly revised total of 1.8 million a week earlier. The data on continuing claims lag the initial-claims data by a week.

Unemployment levels have been climbing for three weeks following a string of declines earlier this summer. Companies have slowed hiring and total payrolls shrank last month as demand for labor cools.
