Japan's Kirin Agrees to Buy Jamieson Wellness for US$1.36 Billion
By Kosaku Narioka
Kirin Holdings has agreed to acquire century-old Canadian supplement company Jamieson Wellness for US$1.36 billion in a bid to strengthen its health science business in North America.
The Japanese beverage maker said Friday that it planned to buy all shares of Jamieson Wellness for 1.90 billion Canadian dollars.
Kirin said the health science business is a key driver of growth. In recent years, it acquired Australian nutritional supplement maker Blackmores and Japanese cosmetics and dietary-supplement maker Fancl as part of efforts to expand the health business.
Kirin said it is aiming to strengthen its operations in North America, the world's largest market for supplements. The Japanese company said Jamieson Wellness, founded in 1922, has built a strong brand and sales network in the region.
The acquisition is subject to certain conditions and approvals, including one from the Canadian company's shareholders. The transaction is expected to be completed in October or later. Kirin plans to pay C$45.75 per share.
Jamieson Wellness said its board unanimously approved the acquisition plan.
