Naver Posts Above-Consensus Second-Quarter Net Profit

By Kwanwoo Jun

South Korean internet titan Naver posted resilient second-quarter earnings amid steady growth in its core search-platform and e-commerce businesses.

The above-consensus results come as the company behind Korea's dominant search engine has been expanding its artificial-intelligence push, most recently entering into multibillion-dollar partnerships with AI chip leader Nvidia and U.S. private-equity firm Brookfield to build gigawatt-scale AI cloud infrastructure.

The digital powerhouse has also developed and integrated AI tools across its e-commerce, advertising, fintech and paid-content businesses to drive revenue and earnings growth, though some analysts have warned that such sustained, intense spending could weigh on profit margins.

Net profit for the April-June period rose 42% from a year earlier to 704.3 billion won, equivalent to $494.9 million, the company said Friday. That beat a 471.71 billion won consensus estimate compiled by FactSet.

Revenue climbed 16%, to 3.389 trillion won, and operating profit edged down 0.2%, to 520.3 billion won.

Naver's platform business, which includes advertising and online-shopping services, maintained solid revenue growth from a year earlier, although operating profit in the segment declined modestly.

Overall operating costs jumped 20% from a year earlier in the second quarter.

Shares in the company have fallen about 7% this year, underperforming the benchmark Kospi's nearly 50% rise.
