SEC Establishes Unit Focused on Financial Reporting, Accounting Fraud and Misconduct

The Securities and Exchange Commission is making a new unit within its enforcement division focused on financial reporting and accounting fraud cases.
The new unit, which will also pursue general misconduct in accounting and auditing, will be staffed by attorneys and accountants, the SEC said Wednesday. It will be led by Timothy Zimmerman, who joined the SEC's Division of Enforcement in May.
David Woodcock, director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement, said the unit will be key to pursuing financial reporting fraud, and expands on the division's efforts to crack down on bad actors in the accounting and auditing profession.
"Since my return to the Division, I have been assessing every aspect of our staffing to ensure that we are aligned to deliver results in our core mission areas," Woodcock said.
Zimmerman joined the SEC's Division of Enforcement as a senior advisor to the director. Before joining the agency, Zimmerman worked for 12 years at an international law firm and was most recently deputy general counsel at an international accounting and professional services firm.
