Consumer Sentiment Rose in July, per Michigan Survey
By Matt Grossman
Consumer sentiment improved in July as gasoline prices cooled, according to the final results of the University of Michigan's monthly survey.
The survey's sentiment index rose to 55.2 in July, from 49.5 in June. An initial reading earlier this month landed at 54.4.
The average gasoline price declined in July to $3.95, from $4.05 in June, according to AAA. But prices at gas stations have climbed again in recent days above $4.10, which could spell more consumer inflation concerns ahead as the calendar turns to August.
Even though renewed fighting in the Middle East, and its impact on energy markets, is looming over the economy, consumers remain primarily concerned with daily affordability challenges, said Joanne Hsu, the survey's director.
"Consumers remain focused on pocketbook issues like purchasing power, while political or military developments remain more in the background," she said.
