Hermes Sales Pick Up as Luxury Sector Eyes Upswing

By Andrea Figueras

Hermes said sales growth picked up pace in the second quarter, making the Birkin bag maker the latest sign that luxury companies may be leaving years of sluggish demand behind.

The Parisian fashion house said it made revenue of 4.09 billion euros ($4.66 billion) for the three-month period. This was 6.7% higher compared with the same period a year earlier excluding currency movements. For the first quarter, the group booked a 5.6% increase in revenue.

The overall result compares with analysts' prospects of 4.07 billion euros, according to Visible Alpha.

The group said the performance was driven by growth in all regions, with the exception of the Middle East, which showed good resilience in a challenging environment.

"We look to the second semester with confidence," Executive Chairman Axel Dumas said.

The company said it continues to target sales growth at constant exchange rates in the medium term despite economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
