Rogers Communications Offloads Wednesday NHL Games to Amazon Prime Video in 12-Year Deal

By Adriano Marchese

Rogers Communications signed a 12-year sublicensing agreement with Amazon.com's Prime Video for National Hockey League broadcast rights in Canada, reshaping how fans will watch games on television and streaming over the next decade.

Beginning with the 2026-2027 season, the deal makes Prime Video the exclusive Canadian broadcaster for at least 26 national regular-season games a year in both English and French as well as select rights to certainly Stanley Cup Playoff series.

The agreement moves mid-week and early post-season broadcasts of games to streaming from traditional cable platforms and expands Amazon's sports footprint across its Canadian subscriber base.

Rogers's broadcast deal with Amazon comes shortly after the Toronto company announced it is buying out the remaining 25% portion of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment from Kilmer Sports--the company belonging to Canadian businessman Larry Tanenbaum--for 4.35 billion Canadian dollars (US$3.08 billion).

The MLSE transaction gives Rogers total control of one of Canada's most lucrative sports businesses, which includes the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association, Major League Soccer's Toronto FC and the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.
