Munich Re Profit Gets Boost From Low Losses Claims, Investment Result

By Adria Calatayud

Munich Re said its second-quarter net profit beat analysts' expectations, due to low major-loss expenditure and a strong investment performance.

The German reinsurer said Friday that net profit for the quarter was 2.2 billion euros ($2.50 billion), against consensus estimates of 1.79 billion euros. For the same period last year, the company made a profit of 2.1 billion euros.

Munich Re said the result was based on preliminary numbers, with full results due to be published on Aug. 7.

The group's property-and-casualty reinsurance segment was buoyed by low major-loss expenditure, while a strong investment result contributed to the performance of its Ergo segment.

Munich Re said it is firmly on track to meet its annual profit target of 6.3 billion euros.
